MLSP Series: Recent Work
I have used self-portraiture as a visual way to document my life for many years. In 'Limelight' are recent events which are aesthetically linked in palette, composition and mood. 'MLSP with Henk Pander' invites the viewer into the several week sittings in which I posed for Portland-based, Dutch artist Henk Pander in the spring/summer of 2007. The painting Pander made is a time capsule in itself, and I found it to be a very rewarding experience to return the favor of posing for him, as he sat for my 'Portland Artist Portrait' series the year before. Having known him and his family for twenty years, it was a moving experience to spend quiet hours together musing on art and life.
'MLSP Ritz Hotel' was made during a meeting with a friend. We noticed that my business card on the table was thematically similar to the room key with the image of the Statue of Liberty. The photograph was made just before deciding to relocate to New York City.
'MLSP Natural History' is part of an ongoing series of photographs of dioramas. I have always been drawn to Native American culture, and the Hall of Eastern Woodlands Indians and the Hall of Northwest Coast Indians of the Natural History Museum, seems to be my favorite meditative place in New York City. Seeing the Native American Indian culture presented in glass cases does make me sad and the not-so-distant past and subsequent demise of our indigenous people has always been difficult for me to accept.
In the winter of 2007 I returned to the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica where 'MLSP, Montezuma' was made. The 'still life' sentimental objects that I travel with are just as illuminating as figurative self portraits. The tiger bandana has been all over the world with me.
